Red light panels are the category where marketing and reality diverge the most. Two panels with near-identical spec sheets can perform very differently, and the number brands shout loudest about is often the least meaningful. This guide focuses on the handful of things that actually determine whether a panel is any good.
Most therapeutic panels emit red light (around 630–660 nm) and near-infrared light (around 810–850 nm). Red is associated with skin and surface tissue; near-infrared penetrates deeper. Multi-wavelength panels add extra bands, but two well-chosen wavelengths already cover the most-studied uses, so don't over-index on a long wavelength list — a five-wavelength panel isn't automatically better than a well-built two-wavelength one.
Irradiance (power density, in mW/cm²) is the headline spec, and also the most abused. Brands frequently quote figures measured right at the panel surface, which are far higher than what actually reaches you in a session.
The number that matters is independently measured irradiance at six inches, a realistic treatment distance. Higher irradiance means shorter sessions for the same dose — up to a point; more is not always better, because a dose that's too high offers no extra benefit.
When a brand publishes third-party spectrometer data at six inches, that transparency is itself a good sign. When a brand only quotes a huge surface number with no distance, treat it as a marketing figure.
Decide early whether you need full-body coverage or targeted treatment — it changes both the size and the price of the right panel.

Low flicker and low EMF are marks of a well-engineered panel. Cheap drivers can produce visible or invisible flicker; better panels minimise it. EMF is only a meaningful consideration up close, and reputable brands publish low figures. Neither should be your first filter, but between two otherwise similar panels they're a reasonable tie-breaker.
Beyond the light itself, look at build quality (aluminium housings dissipate heat and last), mounting flexibility (door hanger, stand or wall), fan noise, and whether the panel offers pulsing or app control if you value those. These are the things you live with day to day, and they're where premium brands justify their price rather than on raw output.
This is the category where value brands most clearly rival premium ones: measured irradiance for a few hundred dollars can match panels costing several times more. What you give up with value brands is design, app polish and sometimes coverage — not necessarily light output.
